When I wrote Modern Sorcery many moons ago, I hoped it would be the first book in a series. I wanted to write ten books about these characters, so I did. I thought the series would end with Timeless Gods, but a year later, I had an idea that was best served by Jonathan, Kelly, and Esther so I had to write an eleventh book. Then a year later, another idea slapped me and I had to write a twelfth. I planned a thirteenth, but life got in the way.
Well, this year life got out of the way, so I finally wrote that thirteenth book. It’s called Wicked Shadows and it clocks in at 70,000 words. While it’s not necessary to have read the earlier books, I think it will be a much better experience if you have because there are a lot of references to things that happened earlier. Besides, it’s a fun ride getting here. I try to write these so people can start anywhere. When we meet a new friend, we don’t know what crazy twists their lives have taken, but if we like them, we talk to them and find out. I see series books the same way. I had a reader tell me she started with book five—the middle of the Time Travel Trilogy—and she loved it. She went back to get the earlier books, too, of course.
Wicked Shadows kicks off shortly after Undead Agent ended. It brings back some characters going all the way back to the first book. It also features characters from the Kelly Chan books. In fact, there are two (count ‘em) Kellys in this novel. Yeah, that layered time stuff is crazy, but it did give us an extra Kelly.
While I’m not going to go into the plot here because it’s complex, captivating, and other words that start with a C (cool, compelling, cinematic). It’s also another great C word: complete. Hard to believe I wrote the first couple of chapters four years ago. Back then, it was called Forbidden Shadows, but I think Wicked Shadows is a better title.
Where can you get it? Just click HERE or anywhere I put the actual title in this little missive where every paragraph begins with a W (because the title Wicked Shadows starts with a W. See what I did there? Yes, I worked in an extra link to the book).
What’s next? I can tell you I’m cruising along on book fourteen in the Jonathan Shade series, so that should be the next one out of the chute. Enjoy the new novel, and have a Happy New Year!
Having finished Wicked Shadows (and gone back to reread Timeless Gods onward), I am curious if there are plans to actually explore Jonathan's use of magic in future books and how it would actually work given that the mentions of it being possible are not inherently similar. Immortal Ascendant says it is a result of the skull ritual, while the Voodoo queen (assuming I remember who it was that told him correctly) said it was a matter of learning to adjust the balance.
I cannot wait to see where the next chapter takes everyone.
