FREE book and a look back at 2017
2017 was my best year as a fiction writer. I made more money that year, sure, but that was because I was more productive. I released 6 novels, 2 novelettes and 3 short stories (and wrote a third novelette that came out in early 2018).
The year began with the release of the 10th Jonathan Shade novel, Timeless Gods in February. At the time, I thought it was going to be the final book in the series. Then I created the pen name Dan Winchester and brought out the first two Tombstone Jack novelettes. They did well, and if not for another series I wanted to do for fun, I might have kept going with the bounty hunter right away. Later in the year, Rebecca Hodgkins and I brought out the fourth Kelly Chan novel, Zombie Rising. She did the heavy lifting on the collaborations, which is good because she’s a better writer than I am. The short stories were written for anthologies, though one (“Necrocite” an sf tale co-written with Bill D. Allen) came out in an eZine (yes, an editor rejected it, but he had a co-editor who liked it and snagged it for an eZine). My next was a crime story, “An Officer and a Hitman,” the sixth of my hit man series. The last those stories is my favorite: “Dying to Live,” which is here on Substack if you want to read it for free. And you should because it’s about what happens to Esther immediately after the aforementioned Timeless Gods.
Meanwhile, I wrote a four-book series called The Half-Assed Wizard. Book one was, you guessed it, The Half-Assed Wizard. It was my biggest launch up to that point, but The Big-Ass Witch launched even bigger the following month. I made use of an awesome targeted newsletter for those, and would have used them again for The Dumbass Demon and The Lame-Assed Doppelganger, but there was a lawsuit brought against the owner of that company by another writer, and I felt it best to steer clear until the dust settled. Alas, the launches on the last two books weren’t in the same league as the first two.
That brings us to the point of this Substack post. I recently took the series wide (meaning the ebooks are no longer exclusive to Amazon). As such, I can give you the first book for FREE. Naturally, I hope you’ll read it and be amused enough to read the other books in the series (if only to see the lengths I had to go to in order to motivate a lazy slacker wizard to take action). I asked Amazon to price-match book one to free, and they were kind enough to do so. As such, I can give you universal book links provided by Books2Read, and you can snag the book(s) from your preferred retailer whether it’s Amazon, Apple, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, or a host of others.

And if you want to buy the others, here are links to those, too. Just click on the titles.

Thanks for reading, and I’ll be back before too long with a brand-new Jonathan Shade novel. I just approved and paid for the cover and I’ll probably have the novel ready before the final design is delivered. That’s my goal, anyway.
Before I go, I can recommend a couple of movies: Sinners is my favorite movie of the year so far. Thunderbolts* is a lot of fun if you like the Marvel movies. I’m also digging season two of The Last of Us (I knew enough about the game to know about that scene).
Have a great weekend.
All best,
Gary
